Reversal of Fortune

Like you, all of us BoardSource were fascinated as we watched the Susan G. Komen for the Cure controversy play out last week. On Friday, just minutes after my colleague, Rita Santelli, shared her thoughts on the board’s role in communicating in a crisis situation such as the one Komen found itself (see previous post), BoardSource’s  hallways were once again abuzz with chatter —and Twitter – this time focused on Komen’s startling decision to reverse its decision to cut its support of Planned Parenthood.

While we don’t know what went on in Komen’s boardroom, the reversal raises a question that I invite you to weigh in on here: What differentiates a board that makes sound decisions from a board that makes, well, not-so-sound decisions?

From my perspective, three words: Culture of inquiry.

What’s a culture of inquiry, you ask?  Nancy Axelrod, in her book, Culture of Inquiry: Healthy Debate in the Boardroom, says it is characterized by the following norms:

  • A sense of mutual respect, trust, and inclusiveness among board members.
  • The capacity to explore divergent views in a respectful rather than adversarial manner.
  • A willingness to gather relevant information to inform decisions.
  • Equal access to information.
  • The presence of active feedback mechanisms that help the board engage in continuous improvement.
  • An individual and collective commitment to decisions, plans of action, and accountability to follow through on the board’s agreements.

“Boards that foster a culture of inquiry,” she writes, “are better positioned to tackle controversial matters, to look at issues from all sides, and make thoughtful decisions.  When dialogue, candor, and dissent are all part of group dynamics, board members master the skills of learning, dissecting the issues, and responding thoughtfully, truthfully, and in the best interests of the organization.”

We’ll never know whether Komen’s board engaged in a rigorous debate before adopting a policy prohibiting the organization from funding any group under investigation by a government body. It’s unlikely any board member could ever be fully prepared for the firestorm that decision set off. And we’ll have to wait for a whole lot of dust to settle before we know whether the decision and ultimate reversal causes permanent damage to the organization.

But at BoardSource we’ve seen a whole lot of boards and a whole lot of dustups and we can say with impunity:  No board ever regretted examining an issue too closely before it made a decision, particularly one that could potentially affect many, many lives.  Challenging one another, asking the hard questions and the follow-up questions — this is the essence of the culture of inquiry that boards should embrace.

    I’d suggest if a board is true to the mission of the organization, these kind of situations might not happen.

  2. A culture of inquiry is important and can help an organization make decisions on thorny issues. It has to start with who is on the board. The board nominating process needs to be one that creates that culture of inquiry. Too often it seems, boards elect people to their ranks who think like they do and who are likely to make decisions like they do. But if nominating committees will take care to recruit and propose individuals for board service who bring differing perspectives to the table, there will be more inquiry and thoughtful evaluation of decisions as they are made. Exploring issues from all sides, keeping the mission in mind, will result in better decision making.

    Thanks, Nell, for linking to your blog post. As I wrote in the original post, we don’t know what went on in the boardroom nor in management discussions. But in general, when “founder’s syndrome” exists, we see a resistance to change and an overidentification of the founder with the organization itself. Here’s my take: let’s refrain from putting labels on this evolving situation — Karen Handel, Komen’s vice president for public policy and the executive most closely identified with the controversial decision, resigned yesterday, and of course the charity will be struggling for some time to recover from the public relations nightmare. And if the board is smart, it will look at ALL the factors that led up to the debacle, including whether founder’s syndrome played a role.
